JUNE: THE SIGN OF THE TRIPLE DISTELFINK

This portrait of Gladstone Gander is related to my story 'The Sign of the Triple Distlefink' ('Kolmoistikliäisen merkki', AA 2/98), with which we honoured the 50th anniversary of Gladstone [the character, not the publisher]. The pose contains a multitude of good-luck charms, around Gladstone - at least in American tradition - such as four-leafed clovers, a horse-shoe hang with its pointy end up and key-holders made of rabbit's feet. Near the lower edge there are signs of the triple distlefinks - they are German magic signs to bring good luck that the German immigrant farmers painted to the walls of their barns.

(D.U.C.K. spoiler: look at the clover-leaves behind Gladstone's tail feathers.)
