FEBRUARY: NORTH OF THE YUKON

The choice for the cold month of February is a pin-up suggested by Carl Barks' "North of the Yukon" which took place in the American version of Lapland we call Alaska. Actually, Alaska is WEST of the Yukon Territory which is referred to in Barks' stories of $crooge's Goldrush days, but the Yukon River runs through the center of Alaska, and this river must be what Barks' title refers to. (But a catchy-sounding story title does not need to make excuses!) Here we see $crooge rescuing the noble old sled dog Barko from the ice floes of the rushing river, while his old nemesis Soapy Slick prepares to make a getaway with a flight-bag containing important papers (the "PWA" stands for "Pan World Airlines"). In 1896 Soapy had loaned $crooge the money he needed to finance his prospecting during the Yukon Goldrush, but he had paid Soapy back with interest in 1898 and had the receipt to prove it. (We see the scene from the misty past in the upper section of the pin-up - notice the "interest" that $crooge is paying the loan shark for tricking him into signing a fraudulent loan agreement.) In Barks' story, the modern day Soapy got his hands on $crooge's receipt and hoped to destroy the proof that the loan was repaid 60 years earlier, thereby giving Soapy ownership of everything $crooge owned! (It didn't work. Hah!)

(D.U.C.K. spoiler: the dedication is seen on the edge of the ice floe just above the tip of Barko's tail.)
