APRIL: THE GOLDEN HELMET

"The Golden Helmet"! My FAVORITE Donald Duck adventure! This may be the story that gave me my love of historical adventures! I grew up with this tale, it being one of the issues that my sister bought when I was less than 1 year old. But I don't think it's just the fact that I've lived with this story my entire life. this is just about Barks' most perfect adventure yarn! It has such a cinematic flavor throughout! Notice how the tale opens with Donald in a boring museum guard job and how we feel his boredom and restlessness! Then notice how he becomes embroiled in the hunt for a golden artifact that, due to international laws created a millennium ago, would give the finder ownership of all of North America! Notice how the race for the lost treasure unwraps in such grand form with storm-tossed ships and defeat turned into victory! And the way that both the members of each faction turn on each other as their human greed realizes the possibilities of being King of a Continent! And then how, in the spirit of the best treasure hunts such as THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE, the treasure is ultimately lost and the seekers realize that what they had in the first place was really more valuable than what they sought so desperately. And how. uh. well, I think they wanted me to talk about my stupid pin-up, but I'd rather talk about Barks' actual classic story! I LOVE that story! I love the story so much that back in the late 50's and early 60's when I was a kid writing and drawing comics for my private amusement (for my eyes only), I once copied this entire adventure, panel by panel, word for word, using my own characters. The act of telling such a wonderful story in words and pictures was such a joy (and much better than the other stories I was writing on my own at age 10 or so)! Well, one thing I should mention is that I seem to have accidentally left Lawyer Sharky's pince-nez eyeglasses off his big snoot! See - even when I was drawing the darn pin-up, my reminiscences about that great story distracted my concentration. I LOVE that story. had I mentioned that?

(D.U.C.K. spoiler: the dedication is written sideways down the museum curator's boot. the "D.U.C." are formed by the boot laces, and the "K." is shaped out of two creases. Now. before I write the next pin-up text, I think I'll go read "The Golden Helmet" again. I LOVE that story, y'know?)
