OCTOBER: LOST BENEATH THE SEA

This pin-up accompanied a printing of Barks' "Lost Beneath the Sea", one of the later stories in his career. It concerned $crooge and Donald sallying forth in a mini-submarine to seek a sunken ocean liner - the ship had been carrying $crooge's beloved #1 Dime when it sank! But what our heroes discover is that the ship, as well as many other sunken vessels, has been dragged off by some mysterious deep-sea force! When the Ducks follow the trail they discover that the theft is the work of outer-space aliens who are stealing the wrecks to salvage the metal in the ship hulls, then "beaming" the metal to their home planet. (Looks like I managed to fit just about that whole alien plot into the one porthole view.) Also in my scene you can see the four-armed boss alien gesturing to Donald to exit the sub and surrender. You also see Huey, Dewey and Louie in the scene, even though they were not members of the mini-sub's crew in Barks' story. Well, we call that "artistic license". when we want to call fibbing by a fancy name.

(D.U.C.K. spoiler: this is a worse example of the dedication being wiped out by the colorist than was the August pin-up. Turn the picture 90 degrees clockwise and look at the large light unit on the structure near $crooge's head. You can see the "D." as the bottom beam below the lights, the "U." as the center light in the bottom row. but then the colorist completed some lines and joined the "C." and the "K." together where they were similarly forming the upper beam and center light. See it. sorta?)
