DECEMBER: A CHRISTMAS FOR SHACKTOWN

There's no better pin-up for December than one done for Mr. Barks' classic "Christmas for Shacktown", first published 52 years ago this month. While my favorite stories might be "The Golden Helmet" or "Only a Poor Old Man", many other Duckfans name ".Shacktown" as their top choice. This is such a popular favorite that, when I first began to work for Europe, one publisher's first request of me was that I do a sequel to this story. a continuation that would explain how $crooge McDuck ever got his billions out of the bottom of that cavern where it was last seen at the end of ".Shacktown". I finally did do a sequel to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this 1951 story - that was two years ago this month. But forget that - this pin-up is for the original "Christmas for Shacktown"! I've done the pin-up as another conglomeration of story elements decorating a Christmas Tree. At the top you see Donald toasting the season with a mug of Christmas cheer in one hand, and his pet money-eating rat with which he tricked Uncle $crooge into making a Shacktown donation. Below him we have the three Nephews - one has borrowed Donald's disguise as $crooge's own Uncle Jake McDuck (used in another unsuccessful attempt to trick $crooge out of some money for charity), the third is brandishing a snow-shovel (such as the Junior Woodchucks used to raise their Shacktown contributions), and the center Nephew is simply trying to avoid being poked by the Star that Donald is carelessly pushing down. On the left Daisy Duck is posed with a come-hither look under a sprig of mobile mistletoe (does Finnish mistletoe look like American mistletoe?); and to the right Gladstone is displaying the lost wallet of cash that he finds in the story, enabling him to claim a reward for his charity contribution. And in the foreground sits $crooge, resigned to the long wait as the toy train brings his money out of the cavern a few dollars at a time, as you recall was the case at the conclusion of ".Shacktown". (But don't worry. my sequel explained how he didn't really have to wait the expected 272 years, 11 months, three weeks and 4 days to reclaim his fortune.) And by the way, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and thanks for being the world's greatest Duckfans!

(D.U.C.K. spoiler: The dedication is hidden in the train-set's wheels, one letter in each wheel width the D in the train's front wheel. It's easier to see if the picture is turned 90 degrees counter-clockwise.)
