The Clan McDuck
The tartan

Like every Scottish clan the Clan McDuck has their own tartan in addition to the traditional heraldic symbols as the coat of arms and the banner. The McDuck tartan is shown in some stories by Carl Barks and Don Rosa, like in Hound of the Whiskervilles by Barks and in the pages of chapter 1 of Lo$, The Last of The Clan McDuck (1991), as it's worn by the ghost of Sir Quackly McDuck who shows the young Scrooge around inside the castle. However due to different coloring by different publishers, the tartan doesn't look exactly similar from one version to another.

The tartan of the Clan McDuck was first shown by Carl Barks in 1960 in the classic Hound of the Whiskervilles. In this story Scrooge says: "Say! This is a tartan I've never seen before! And it's old!" He must then have forgotten that he saw it on the ghost of Sir Quackly McDuck in his younger years. As will be seen from the below illustrations the coloring is not consistent from publisher to publisher. So what is correct then? Don Rosa says: "Even though Barks almost certainly did not make suggestions for the coloring of the tartan, my only choice is to go by the original Gold Key coloring in whatever year that "Hound of the Whiskervilles" story was published. I think the Gladstone versions of that reprint and my Lo$ series used the matching coloring... and I *think* that was green stripes and a green square on an orange field, right? The European editions of the Lo$ stories sometimes printed the colors reversed."
